When someone types "salon near me" or "clinic in Tolichowki" into Google, two things usually show up: a map with a few businesses, and a list of websites below it. Most customers call one of the first few names they see.
You can't buy your way into that map. Google says it plainly: there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. What you can do is give Google, and your customers, clear and complete information. This guide shows you how.
What Google says it looks at
Google's own help page on improving your local ranking names three things:
- Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how far your business is from the person searching, or from the area they typed.
- Prominence: how well-known your business is. Google says this includes information from across the web, such as links to your website, and your reviews and ratings.
You can't move your shop closer to every customer. But relevance and prominence depend a lot on the information you put out there, and that part is in your hands.
Part 1: Your Google Business Profile
This is the listing that shows on Google Maps and in the map box on Search. Google lets you add or claim your Business Profile at no charge, and most owners can set it up themselves in an evening.
Checklist for your profile:
- Claim and verify it. Search your business name and city on Google Maps. If a listing exists, choose "Claim this business". If not, add a new one. Then complete the verification step Google offers you.
- Pick the right main category. "Dental clinic" is more useful than "Clinic". "Banquet hall" is more useful than "Event venue" if that is what you are.
- Fill in every field. Address, phone number, hours, and holiday hours. Google's ranking page says complete, accurate details help it match you to the right searches.
- Add real photos. The entrance, the inside, your team at work. Customers want to see what they will walk into.
- Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to every review, including the bad ones. Google lists responding to reviews as one of its tips.
- Add your website link. This connects your profile to a page with more detail.
Part 2: Your website
Your profile gives the short version. Your website is where a customer decides. It also gives Google more text to understand what you offer and where.
Give every page a clear title
The page title is the blue line people click in search results. Google's guidance on title links asks for titles that are unique for each page, descriptive and concise, without repeating the same keywords again and again.
A weak title: Home
A clearer one: Zara Hair & Beauty Salon, Mehdipatnam | Bridal makeup and haircuts
Do the same for every page: services, rates, gallery, contact.
Write what customers actually ask
Think about the questions you answer on the phone every day, and put the answers on the page:
- What services do you offer, and roughly what do they cost?
- Which area are you in, and what is a nearby landmark?
- What are your timings? Are you open on Sunday?
- Is there parking?
- How do I book or enquire?
Using the words your customers use helps with relevance. If people search "kids haircut", write "kids haircut", not only "junior styling".
Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should match on your website, your Google profile, Instagram, JustDial and anywhere else you are listed. An old address or a different phone number on one site confuses customers.
Make it easy on a phone
Many customers will find you on a phone. Check your own site on your phone, on mobile data:
- Does it open quickly?
- Can you read the text without zooming?
- Is there a call button and a WhatsApp button you can tap?
- Does the map open in Google Maps?
Add a sitemap and connect Search Console
A sitemap is a file that lists your pages so Google can find them. Google Search Console is a free tool where you can submit that sitemap and see which searches show your site. If someone built your website, ask them whether both are set up.
Part 3: Being known outside Google
Prominence is partly about how much the rest of the web mentions you. A few simple, honest things help:
- List your business on the local directories your customers use, with the same details as above.
- If a local association, supplier or event page mentions you, ask if they can link to your website.
- Post on your social pages now and then, with your website link in the bio.
None of this needs a big budget. It needs consistency.
Mistakes to avoid
- Stuffing your business name with keywords on your Google profile ("Best Salon Hyderabad Cheap Haircut"). Use your real business name.
- Buying reviews or writing your own. It misleads customers and can get your profile into trouble.
- Leaving old timings or a dead phone number online. One missed call is a lost customer.
- Expecting overnight results. Changes to your profile and website can take time to show up in search.
- Believing anyone who promises "page 1" or "No.1 on Google". Nobody controls Google's results.
Quick checklist to print
- Business Profile claimed and verified
- Correct main category
- Hours, phone and address complete and current
- Real photos of the place and the work
- Replies to all reviews
- Website link on the profile
- Every website page has its own clear title
- Services, area, timings and parking written on the site
- Same name, address and phone everywhere
- Site checked on your own phone, on mobile data
